Spring Clean Your Spa

If you’re like me, winter is the time your spa gets the most frequent use. The temptation of a hot soak on a cold night leads to almost daily use in my household.

Spring is a great time to give your hot tub some TLC in return for the work it did for you all winter. Below are some guidelines for giving your spa a thorough spring cleaning.

Interior Spa Cleaning

In the likelihood your spa is due to be drained and refilled (which should be done every 3-4 months), take the opportunity to “purge” the plumbing lines. Biofilm and other non-organic material will build up and can make chemicals work harder over time. Add a purge product and run the spa overnight before draining. Clean or replace your filter while you’re waiting for the spa to fill back up.

  1. Replace your Filter or clean with Great Filter Cleaner or similar product.
  2. Purge your plumbing lines with Natural Chemistry’s Spa Purge
  3. Disconnect and drain your spa
  4. Clean the interior with vinegar or Marquis’ Spa Bright and a Spa Brush.
  5. Refill spa using a PreFilter especially if you’re on well water, and place the hose inside the filter cavity while filling to minimize “air lock”)
  6. Test and balance water

Exterior Spa Cleaning

Today’s spa cabinets don’t require much care, thank goodness! But if your spa’s exterior is looking dull, a few simple steps can revive it.

  1. Spray cabinet with hose
  2. Wipe down with towel and a mild cleanser like Spa Bright
  3. Rinse with hose
  4. Apply 303 Protectant to cabinet if desired

Hot Tub Cover Cleaning

Extreme temps take their toll on vinyl hot tub covers. Cleaning and protecting the cover regularly will prolong its useful life.

  1. Rinse cover with hose
  2. Wipe down with towel and Spa Bright
  3. Rinse thoroughly with water and allow to air dry
  4. Apply 303 Protectant to minimize UV damage
  5. Replace broken clips with EasyKlips
