The Scoop on Ozonators and Mineral Systems

Here on the retail side of Northwest Arkansas Pool and Spa, we start to notice patterns. One is that, with the scarcity of available hot tubs, more customers are buying from so-called “parking lot” sales. Another is that those same customers often express disappointment in their purchase. Finally, and most disturbing, is the lie that these customers are often told; that they don’t need to use a sanitizer! More on that in a moment.

It probably goes without saying that parking lot sales rely on a sense of urgency to drive sales. Right now, that urgency is very high, and very real, thanks to the pandemic. Don’t be fooled! Limited selection, compounded by pushy, high-pressure sales people, is a sure recipe for buyer’s remorse. These sales people are also perpetuating the myth that the inclusion of a feature, such as an ozonator or a mineral system, eliminates the need for sanitizer.

Back to the question at hand. Do I need a sanitizer in my new hot tub? Yes!

While ozonators and mineral systems are great features, features that we regularly include in the tubs we sell, they are no substitute for sanitization. Sanitizers, like chlorine and bromine, isolate and destroy the contaminants that inevitably end up in your hot tub. Ozonators and mineral systems do not.

So, what do they do?

Ozonators infuse your bathing water with ozone gas. Ozone gas may eat away at some (not all) of the contaminants in your tub, reducing (not eliminating) your chemical use, and saving you money.

Mineral systems infuse your bathing water with silver, zinc, copper, and limestone. Silver and zinc have natural antibacterial properties, while copper has natural antimicrobial properties, keeping algae at bay. Limestone can help stabilize pH. Again, the presence of these minerals reduces your chemical use, saving you money.

You’re better off thinking of these features as sanitizer superchargers!
